People think getting started on their fitness journey is the biggest challenge and perhaps for some people it is. But I’ve also come across a lot of women who find it very hard to maintain their fitness after getting started.
Maintaining that motivation is hard. This is one of the reasons why women struggle to maintain their fitness.
The key thing when it comes to fitness is to not squeeze your workout in to an existing schedule. It is so important that you make your workout a priority and make it a habit. You need to make sure that you’re allocating time and you’re putting time aside for fitness. If you’ve got a very busy schedule, then you can’t just squeeze in a workout, it’s not going to work that way because you are not going to make it a priority.
You’re going to get run down very easily for starters. Although keeping fit has a lot of benefits, it is still very taxing on your immune system. So you need to be careful. You need to make sure that fitness has its time. It is important that you give it its very own time slot.
We all put time aside to go to work. We all put time aside to veg out on the couch. We even put time aside to go for coffee! When it comes to your health and fitness, it needs to be the same. We need to put time aside and we need to commit to that time.
There are 168 hours in a week.
There are 222 forty-five minute blocks.
Surely you can allocate at least 3 out of the 222 forty-five minute blocks to a workout? That would leave you with 219 forty-five minute blocks to do whatever you want…
I would recommend for someone who’s starting out in fitness to schedule in a workout twice a week. Then, gradually building over a couple of weeks, increase your attendance to three times a week and then ideally four (or more!) times a week.
You want to be active every day and making sure that we’re not sitting down for long periods of time. We want to be ideally exercising every day. I guess that might not be ideal or possible for everyone, but I would highly encourage at least starting out two times a week gradually moving up to three and then trying to exercise at least every second day, if not every day.
1. Make time for fitness. Make fitness become a part of your routine.
Don’t just squeeze it in. Make sure it is just as much as a priority as your job or career. Remember, your health, in the long run, will have more of an impact on your quality of life, than money ever will.
2. Schedule your workout in at the same time each day, that way you won't double book.
3. Find a workout buddy to help keep you accountable.
A wise man (ironically) once said to me: we can’t control much in this world, but the one thing we can control is our attitudes towards our own health and fitness…
